Through the financial donations given by our members, we support the running costs, and sometimes the building costs, of seminaries and novitiates around the world.

SPA Seminaries

The SPA worldwide supports every seminary in mission dioceses throughout the world. The SPA in England and Wales supports a portion of these seminaries, five of which are where we offer our sponsorship scheme. All contributions received through donations, legacies and sponsorships are sent directly to the seminaries to help them train priests for the Church of today and tomorrow.

Our Lady of Lanka Major Seminary, Sri Lanka

This year, since the war ended, the students in our National Seminary were unanimous in wanting to visit our brother Seminarians in Jaffna.  We, whether Sinhalese or Tamil, are going to do the same mission in the vineyard of the Lord.  Our unity will be a sign and encouragement to all others in Sri Lanka to shed all differences and come together for peace in this island nation.

First the Seminarians met a group of children who were victims of war.  Whilst they relived their experiences with tears in their eyes, there was also not a single dry eye among the Seminarians.  They also spent one morning with families who are trying to resettle themselves.  On their own initiative, the Seminarians had collected some food and school items, which they distributed to the families.

Whilst in Jaffna the Seminarians from Kandy spent an evening meeting informally with the Seminarians from Jaffna, sharing all their experiences with one another.

Haiti: Major Seminary of Our Lady
'The Major Seminary of Our Lady is a centre of formation to the priesthood.  All ten dioceses of Haiti send their seminarians to this centre, which has trained many generations of priests.  The teachers are from both Haiti and France.  Today the situation is very difficult.  The earthquake was terrible for this institution.  The seminary buildings were destroyed.  One teacher and fourteen seminarians died; two needed their feet amputated and one required the amputation of his hand.

Our Lady’s seminary cannot continue adequately with the training of its students for the priesthood because we lost the chapel, refectory, bedrooms, administration offices, classrooms, games rooms, library and conference room.  The seminarians can’t rest at night as they now sleep in tents. The situation of Our Lady’s seminary is very hard.    The needs are numerous.  What can we do?'
