Sisters bring brighter prospects to prisoners
June 30th, 2010

BANGALORE, India - Catholic Sisters in Bangalore are bringing improvements to life in the city jail, thanks to their rehabilitation efforts.

'We are committed to giving the prisoners every possible assistance, spiritual, emotional, material and legal,' said Sister Adele, who works alongside Sisters Luciana Thomas and Zephrine Francis, from the Sisters of Charity of Saints Caetano and Jerosa.  'We turn criminal hands into creative hands,' she added.

The Sisters work with Prison Ministry India, a voluntary organization founded by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference. Release, reform and rehabilitation are the major focus of their work. They also provide additional medicines and nutritious food to sick people and, if and when it’s needed, they help sick prisoners to be admitted into specialty hospitals.

In 2009, the APF in England and Wales contributed £997,015 to the Church in India through the Catholic Bishops' Conference.
