PMU FAQs
What is the Pontifical Missionary Union (PMU)?
The Missionary Union of Priests and Religious is a Pontifical Mission Society founded in 1916 by PIME missionary, Father Paolo Manna, in Italy.

What is the purpose of the PMU?
The Missionary Union of Priests and Religious is a spiritual apostolate. Unlike the other three Pontifical Mission Societies, this mission society does not collect or distribute funds. Its purpose is to educate and inspire priests, Religious, pastoral leaders and those responsible for catechesis and religious education so that they may better animate others to share their faith and to be missionaries themselves, supporting also the missionary work of the Church worldwide. In England and Wales the PMU produces a quarterly theological review of mission (Mission Outlook) which aims to encourage the interest of priests, religious and laity in the missionary work of the Church and in developments in the younger churches.

How can I further my personal spiritual commitment to the Church’s universal mission?
If you are a lay person, you can deepen your commitment to the missionary work of the Church by offering your prayers and personal sacrifices for the worldwide mission of the Church and for missionaries. In addition, the Pontifical Mission Societies offer several publications on mission spirituality for lay people. You may also wish to speak to your Parish Priest or diocesan director of the Pontifical Mission Societies about activities, discussions or pilgrimages in your area designed to animate baptised Catholics to the missionary work of the Church.

Can I make a financial contribution toward the work of the PMU?
Thanks to the gifts and donations the PMU receives, we are able to send copies of Mission Outlook to missionaries overseas who cannot afford the subscriptions. Please make any donations payable to Mission Outlook. If you would like to support the worldwide mission of the Church with a financial gift, you may make a donation to The Society for the Propagation of the Faith (APF), The Society of St. Peter Apostle (SPA) or Mission Together (Holy Childhood) by following the links from the donations button at the top of this page.

Where are the offices of the PMU in England and Wales?
