The purpose of the Pontifical Missionary Union is to educate and inspire priests, Religious men and women, pastoral leaders and those responsible for catechesis and religious education in the spirit of Mission. They will then be better able to animate others to share their faith and to be missionaries themselves.

In England and Wales the PMU produces a quarterly theological review of mission (Mission Outlook) which aims to encourage the interest of priests, religious and lay people in the missionary work of the Church, and in developments in the younger churches.

The PMU in other countries like France, Italy and the Philippines organises seminars on World Mission for seminarians, priests and lay people.

There is also an international centre for missionary animation (CIAM) which organises a variety of meetings, seminars, courses and retreats in English, French and Spanish. Its director is Fr Vito del Prete (PIME) who is the Secretary General of PMU worldwide.

The centre also offers hospitality to groups (up to 40) for: retreats, spiritual exercises, meetings. It is particularly suitable for those wishing to deepen their understanding of the worldwide mission of the Church in today's world.
