Sudan’s children have grown up in a society torn by conflict and civil war. The need for survival has frequently overridden the need for education, especially for girls. The Hella Maya Jayub Girls’ school is situated in the midst of an internally-displaced refugee area of Khartoum, where impoverished and socially-disadvantaged residents lack the basics of water, electricity and other facilities.
Many struggle to survive and cannot afford even the most basic costs of educating their daughters. Through Mission Together (www.missiontogether.org.uk), primary schoolchildren across the world donated £9,000 towards the cost of stationery, exams, books, first aid, school repairs and other needs of some of the school’s 600 under14 year-olds. Cardinal Gabriel Wako, Archbishop of Khartoum, said that the urgency of the school’s needs is greater this year than ever before.
Mission Together’s motto ‘children helping children’ draws young people across the world into a shared sense of prayer and compassion.
