Mission Martyrs

A rising tide of sacrifice for the faith

The word ‘martyr’ means ‘witness’. Throughout the 2000 years of Christianity, there have been witnesses who have lived for the Gospel, but there have also been those who have died for their beliefs.
Many Church personnel are included whom Pope John Paul II described as ‘martyrs of charity’ - sacrificing their lives rather than abandoning the people entrusted to their care.

To read and pray for those who died on mission, please see the list of Mission Martyrs on the left of this page.

Some of those who died whilst ‘on mission’ are better known than others. Of these, some might, at some stage, be officially considered by the Church as martyrs and as role models in our faith. Not all of these  individuals are missionaries as such. Some were killed within their own country whilst it was still considered ‘mission territory’
