Dear Friends
Many greetings from Eccleston Square.
I hope you enjoy reading this issue of Mission Today. We have our usual wise reflections from Fr Chris Fox, and some delightful memories from
Sr Janet.
The article by the seminarian, Philip Adede, is the one I find most challenging. He lives in the reasonably secure surroundings of his formation
community; he also looks out on the largest slum in Africa, Kibera –this area is home for hundreds of thousands of the poorest people on earth.
Such dire poverty is one of the greatest challenges facing the countries of Africa during these first years of the 21st century. It is just one of the symptoms of the divisions which rack that beautiful continent. Pope Benedict’s call to the Bishops of Africa as they prepare for their second Synod is that theChurch should be the bridge-builder for societies
in conflict.
He says, ‘The need for reconciliation on the Continent is today more urgent than ever. Thereconciliation which will regenerate the human
family, sought so much by Africa, is obtained in a justice which is more than human and a peace which is more profound than the absence of war
or the silence of arms.’
APF will continue to support the Church as it responds to the Holy Father. We help to ensure that as many people as possible have access to
the Word of God and to the sacraments, building a ‘culture of love’.
Father John
